We have the knowledge, skills, and resources to reduce our energy consumption and switch to alternative energy sources that are less harmful to the environment. Prompt action and leadership can keep global climate change from causing its worst impacts. The Climate Care Challenge is a two part commitment that first asks participants to make a personal step to help decrease the impacts of climate change, then asks for an outward step that engages the participants community. As people of faith, we have a moral call to pursue environmental justice: the sustainable and equitable sharing of the gifts of God’s creation among all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or class. Yet, inequities abound. To take steps toward healing our relationship with God’s creation and each other, we need to understand the roots of the injustice.
Version 4, updated 2018 Earth Care Congregations are congregations that have committed to the “Earth Care Pledge” and accomplished a specific number of actions toward caring for God’s earth in four categories: worship, education, facilities, and outreach. Congregations earning 25 points in each of the four categories will be certified as Earth Care Congregations and receive various honors. Congregation members will also be invited to participate as individuals by completing similar actions in their homes.
