Two of Minneapolis’ business and community leaders explored efforts to break down barriers and create opportunities for building Black wealth in Minnesota during a Town Talks forum offered by Westminster Presbyterian Church through its Westminster Town Hall Forum last week.
On Thursday night at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS) board director and public historian Tim Hoogland gave an hour-long presentation on the life and legacy of the Rev. David Sindt.
Following the presentation, PHS Executive Director Nancy J. Taylor led a panel discussion reflecting on Sindt’s story and connecting it to the struggles faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities in 2023.
“The grief continues to be heavy,” says the Rev. Ray Thomas, executive presbyter for the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee. “Many of our churches had members, friends or families whose children attend, or once attended, the Covenant School,” where last month’s shooting took the lives of four adults and three children.

The Rev. Carlton Rhoden has challenging responsibilities as pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Long-time residents who have stayed in the inner city have witnessed an exodus of some people to the suburbs while an increase in crime, gang violence and drugs has made life difficult for those who remained behind. Still, the church takes its mission seriously: "Celebrating 110 years of God’s Grace Serving the Community with the Love of Jesus Christ."
